About Small Projects

The projects shown in this gallery illustrate that good design is not limited by the size or budget of a project. While I have been fortunate to work on many large and complex projects over the years, I also enjoy the opportunity to bring thoughtful design and attention to detail to smaller projects.

A project might involve a new front porch, a gazebo, a fireplace, built-in cabinetry, or the remodeling of a special room. These smaller projects can often make a surprisingly significant difference in the character, enjoyment, and usefulness of a home.

Whatever you may have in mind, I welcome the opportunity to discuss your project—regardless of its size or budget.

Garden Gazebo, Cherry Hills Village, CO

This custom garden gazebo provides an intimate outdoor retreat surrounded by lush landscaping. The octagonal structure features slender wood columns, graceful arched openings, decorative scroll brackets, and a cedar-shingle roof crowned by an ornamental finial. Painted trim in contrasting colors highlights the architectural detailing, while the built-in bench seating and brick floor create a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the garden.

This remodeled dining room features custom built-in cabinetry designed as an architectural focal point. Glass-front display cabinets flank a broad arched opening framed by pilasters and substantial moldings, creating a sense of symmetry and permanence. Concealed and recessed lighting highlights the cabinetry and architectural details.

Sun Room Addition

This first-floor sunroom addition expands the living space of the existing home and creates a stronger connection to the backyard and patio. Generous windows bring natural light into the room, while the low-pitched roof and broad overhangs give the addition a simple contemporary character. Natural wood siding distinguishes the new construction while complementing the darker materials of the existing house.

This three-season room addition creates a bright, inviting transition between the home and its outdoor surroundings. A dramatic gabled wall of windows brings abundant natural light into the space and gives the addition an open, airy character. Gray horizontal siding, white trim, and a stone veneer base complement the architecture of the existing residence. An adjoining elevated deck with metal railings extends the living space outdoors and provides convenient access to the landscaped yard.

Denver Architect Robert Larsen designed this custom fireplace mantel and built-in television cabinet as a unified architectural composition. The painted woodwork incorporates raised panels, pilasters, and layered moldings that visually connect the two elements. The television is concealed behind a paneled upward-sliding door, shown closed, allowing the cabinetry to maintain a more traditional appearance when the television is not in use. A stone surround and hearth provide a warm contrast to the painted woodwork and complete the fireplace composition.

The custom TV cabinet is shown with its paneled door partially raised, demonstrating how the television is concealed when not in use. The cabinet and fireplace mantel are integrated into a single composition of painted architectural woodwork.

Custom Entry Doors

Denver Architect Robert Larsen designed this custom arched metal entry door and decorative grille to complement the brick architecture of the residence. Concentric arches and circular metal detailing create an ornamental pattern repeating design elements found elsewhere on the house.

Custom designed entry doors. Only the two door leaves on the right operate. The one on the left is fixed in place for the purpose of creating a symmetrical composition. See next photo for view of interior side.

At the homeowner’s special request, Denver Architect Robert Larsen designed this elaborately ornamented custom mirror as a dramatic focal point above the fireplace. The richly detailed gilded frame reflects the homeowner’s preference for highly decorative classical interiors and creates a striking contrast with the restrained fireplace mantel below.
